小鸟在树上用in。on和in在树上的区别：指树本身之物，比如果实和花朵等，用on the tree。指树外之物，比如在树上停留的鸟，小虫子和猴子等，用in the tree。on表示“在物体的表面上”，而in表示“在其中”。

in the tree表示外部的东西落在树上，例句：The birds are singing in the tree。on the tree表示树上本身自有的东西，例句：There are a lot of apples on the tree when autumn comes。

in和on在表示地点和时间上也各有不同。表示地点时，in表示“处在某物之中”；on表示“处在某物的表面上”。表示时间时，在月份、年份或某一个时间段前，一般用介词in；如果涉及具体的日期，用on表示。

只能用in的表达方式：in the morning、in the afternoon、in the evening和in the night。只能用on的表达方式：on the next morning、on the following afternoon、on the preceding evening、on the night before、on the morning of 6 January等。
